A portion of Keonekai Road and South Kihei Road in Wailea was closed for almost two hours Wednesday as fire crews cleaned up a hazardous materials spill in the area, the Maui Fire Department said.
In the incident reported at 10:43 a.m. Wednesday, fire officials said two containers of muriatic acid containing around two gallons had spilled. Two other containers remained intact. An area of around 150 feet in all directions of the spill were cleared of bystanders and closed to traffic, fire officials said.
One male reported respiratory irritation, fire officials said. He was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and released. He elected to seek further medical attention on his own. The acid is a skin, eye and respiratory hazard and irritant, fire officials said.
