Maurice Gardiner lost his sister Donna Manning in the CTV building collapse.
Ten years ago, Maurice Gardiner helped pull bodies from the crumpled remains of the CTV building, as his own sister lay buried somewhere in the rubble. Donna Manning, a producer and presenter for Canterbury Television, was one of 115 people killed when the building collapsed during the magnitude-6.2 earthquake that struck the city on February 22, 2011. It was just the start of a devastating month for Gardiner and his family. The next day, a photo of Manning’s children, two teens in the throes of grief, was captured. It quickly spread around the world, becoming an enduring symbol of the earthquake s devastation.
