PORTLAND, Oregon In February 2020 the news hit of a new, mysterious virus spreading in Asia. Thousands had to quarantine on board the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship docked in Yokohama, Japan, including a Forest Grove couple. Rebecca and Kent Frasure were on the ship in Japan when the novel coronavirus climbed aboard and began spreading like wildfire. We thought it was going to go away quickly, Rebecca said. We didn t know anything compared to what we know now.
The outbreak of COVID-19 on a cruise ship anchored off Yokohama last February provided an early test of Japan’s defenses against a deadly virus that would later go on to upend our lives.
This time last year, Rebecca and Kent Frasure were preparing for a trip to Japan. The couple was doing a several week-long cruise, but the United States they left was not the same one they returned to. While off the coast of Japan, there was a coronavirus outbreak on their cruise ship. The couple was confined to their cabin until Rebecca tested positive for the virus. Then she was taken to a Japanese hospital for treatment. Kent had to stay.
