Michigan s Black COVID-19 survivors reported more severe symptoms

Carol Thompson Lansing State Journal LANSING A recent University of Michigan report about the experiences of COVID-19 survivors dives further into racial disparities between white and Black Michiganders who contract the deadly disease. The coronavirus burdens Black residents faced early in the pandemic were broader than just their increased likelihood of catching or dying from the illness. They also were more likely to have more serious symptoms, experience racism when accessing health care and be fearful of telling friends and family about their illness. There are prominent Black-white disparities in COVID-19 access to care, recovery and social impact, said Delvon Mattingly, a Ph.D. candidate in the UM school of public health s department of epidemiology. We can use this data to start recognizing that there are disparities and to properly address them through efforts that, for example, dismantle systemic barriers.
