ICE contract cancellation a matter of dignity, compassion; ICE protesters way out of line; Wrong to raise BOE salaries | Letters Updated Dec 24, 2020; ICE detainees part of our human family I have spent a lot of my time walking around Hudson County. Walking has given me a chance to see the true beauty of my community, which is made of different cultures. Walking down Kennedy Boulevard, I can smell the spices of different cultural foods coming from apartment windows or I hear the rolling of the tongue of a language that I have heard but cannot translate. When taking the No. 10 bus from Jersey City to my home in Bayonne, I see faces of all different colors, shapes and sizes. This has brought me comfort knowing my community is so full of life.

Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, Caridad Rodriguez, Jerry Walker and Anthony Romano left in the middle of the meeting as speakers during the public comment portion continued to scold them for voting in favor of a 10-year contract that will allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to continue jailing immigrant detainees at Hudson County Jail.

Hudson Reporter × The Hudson County Sheriff Department placed several people under arrest last week after a judge approved a restraining order effectively preventing ICE protests near Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise s home. Residents region-wide continued to speak out against Hudson County’s decision to renew its contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week. This comes after the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders voted 6-3 on Nov. 24 to renew their contract with ICE to house their detainees at Hudson County Correctional Facility for $120 per person per day despite nearly nine hours of public comment in opposition.
