Don t have to stand by them, do they? a lot has to do with the investigator you assign. i ve seen them assign hack divorce attorneys to come after people who had no clue what they were doing. dahl is not in that category. dahl is a competent guy who, by my friends accounting who worked with him, will do the right thing here. the question becomes what happens after the investigation? this is considered, it is considered an informal investigation. those results go to the commanding officer and they decide what they want to accept or not accept out of that investigation. it seems like a slam dunk case because you just pointed out there s already been a criminal investigation and there s evidence against the guy. this would seem to be pretty easy. one would think. it is never easy. let s remember two things about the current situation. this is the ucmj, uniform code of military justice. you have the administrative side and criminal side. this could get kicked over
Probably even more severe than that. if there s evidence to keep him under lock and key rather than out and about where he can go anywhere, you know, who is to say he s going to stay on base or stay in the country, why is he free? my judgment is that it s a political narrative issue from the white house. if you recall, steve, the president himself welcomed the bergdahl family to the white house and they down played his, quote unquote, bad acts. i think what you re seeing here and this investigation can go any number of ways that they re conducting. 56 is considered an informal investigation, quote unquote. the question now becomes what is the political narrative that may be the pressure point that is on the military to come up with a certain course. it may go against the very facts. that s the issue right now. the fellow who is doing the investigation right now, this general dahl, is a friend of yours. you say he s an upstanding, terrific investigator. but what he s going to do
Proceeding at this point? or the general leading it? what i can tell you is that i had a telephone conversation with major general kenneth dahl, the has been called in from ft. lewis in washington state to conduct the investigation. i gather he has a significant staff that s assisting him in the process. i was impressed by his seriousness at purpose. i was impressed by his human touch in my conversation with him. i thought it was highly professional. i thought it was appropriate. i look forward to meeting him face to face. and do you feel the way in which sergeant bergdahl is being treated has been appropriate? i don t know enough, really, about the specifics of the reintegration program or about, you know, anything that happened at the medical center in germany or before that. but what i can say is i thought that the personnel i dealt with
