SANFORD, Maine – When it comes to the upcoming graduation of Sanford High’s Class of 2021, the goal is to have a commencement ceremony that is “as close to back to normal as we can get,” Principal Matthew Petermann said Tuesday.
That would mean a commencement at Alumni Stadium, this time on Wednesday, June 9, with graduating Spartans marching onto the field as their families and friends watch from the stands, with speeches given from the podium, diplomas handed out on stage, and the usual pomp and circumstance.
Even the starting time would be the same as previous years: 6 p.m.
“We want to give them something they can remember and walk away from and be proud of,” Petermann said.

In the coming weeks, RSU 21 Superintendent Terri Cooper and her staff will be weighing options to decide how students will be receiving their instruction moving forward, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
Cooper said she and her team of administrators decided to explore the issue after receiving interest from the community in having students spend more time at their schools than they currently do with the hybrid model.
Cooper and several administrators on Monday presented the RSU 21 School Board and the public with seven possible approaches they will be exploring.

Deadline for Senior College classes approaches
The registration deadline for community members to sign-up to attend the Senior College’s slate of February online winter classes is Jan. 27.
Eight virtual classes will be offered on Zoom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 2-25.
Classes will include “Maine Turtles and the Turtles of Holt Pond Preserve,” Feb. 2; “Global Economic, Market and Geopolitical Outlook,” Feb. 4; “Poems of Spring” Feb. 9; “Donald Baxter MacMillan, Arctic Explorer,” Feb. 11; “Page Break – Question of Principles,” Feb. 16; “Tennessee Williams Movie Adaptations,” Feb. 18; “Realism to Semi-Abstraction,” Feb. 23; and “Ghosts and Ghost Towns of the White Mountains,” Feb. 5.
