Walking through Kendal, it is still rather sad to see the former Beale’s store lying empty after closing last year, writes Andrew Thomas in his weekly column. The three-floor fashion, beauty and homewares store – formerly JR Taylor and originally Musgroves – had been a fixture on Finkle Street for 161 years. Of course, many high streets across the country are witnessing closed retail units, with the pandemic adding to pressures. It is good that South Lakeland District Council’s Kendal Town Centre Action Plan and Kendal Futures’ Kendal Vision document are designed to revitalise the town centre and high street. Another positive development is that the hoardings on the former Beale’s premises now feature six bright panels highlighting some of the best things that Kendal has to offer.
