A lack of local vaccine supply means it may take up to 12 weeks to vaccinate the 125,000 Kane County residents local health department officials estimate are in the Phase 1B priority category.
However, even people who can get shots now continue to show a reluctance to get them, county officials said Wednesday.
Board member Jarett Sanchez, who chairs the committee that oversees the local health department, told fellow board members that about 50% of the municipal police officers refused the vaccine when it was offered to them as part of the opening of Phase 1B. He added quite a few detainees at the county jail, which has seen multiple outbreaks, also have refused it.
Kane County Board members consider lifting recreational marijuana ban
Updated 1/19/2021 6:01 PM
Despite a renewed push Tuesday to lift the 2019 ban on all marijuana-related businesses in unincorporated Kane County, it s not clear if there are enough votes to challenge the measure.
New county board Chair Corinne Pierog had campaigned on lifting the ban to create local jobs and keep the pressure off property taxes by creating another income source for the county. And, Sheriff Ron Hain, a fellow Democrat, has since eased his initial opposition to such businesses out of fear they would be crime magnets.
But, despite a November election that saw Democrats gain a majority of county board seats, there remain at least 12 board members who supported the 2019 ban or said they would continue to support a ban during their candidacies.

David Rickert, the longest-serving treasurer in Kane County history, has resigned, setting in motion a process to fill an elected position that will instead be served by an appointee for the next two years.
Rickert sent a text message to the Daily Herald Saturday evening saying, I formally resign my position as treasurer effective Sunday, 10 p.m. County board members and board chair Corinne Pierog confirmed receipt of Rickert s formal letter of resignation Tuesday.
The announcement follows a bipartisan call for Rickert to step down as treasurer or relinquish the job he accepted as the chief financial officer for Winnebago County after Pierog s victory over Rickert and her swearing-in as the first female Democrat to become Kane County Board chairman. Last week, Pierog said recent conversations with Rickert indicated his resignation was tenuous.
