The Cataraqui Source Protection Area covers from the eastern end of Lake Ontario and the start of the St. Lawrence River to part of the Bay of Quinte, Hay Bay, the southern portion of the Rideau Canal and the Thousand Islands.
Of the approximate 210,000 residents of the CSPA, 170,000 (80 per cent) depend on municipal drinking water systems from ground surface or groundwater, while the remaining 40,000 (20 per cent) rely on private intakes or wells for their drinking water.
