Pete Schauster has never forgotten the impact of the cyberattack his Manchester-based manufacturer Empire Industries experienced in 2016.
“We were down for three or four days,” said Schauster, who is president of the family-owned maker of pipe hangers and supports that employs 100 people.
The malware attack forced Empire Industries to not only temporarily halt production, but also reassess its cyber risks and infrastructure.
Schauster, who was Empire’s sales leader at the time of the attack, admits he was somewhat naive to the cyber threats a small manufacturer like his faced.
“A lot of smaller companies don’t have the support systems and security protocols set up and are more vulnerable,” he said.

With more business being conducted online and remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic, the increased dependence on technology has been a boon for cyber criminals.
FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate said criminals “took advantage of an opportunity to profit,” from this trend to go on an “internet crime spree.”
Abbate made the comment in the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center’s recently released 2020 Internet Crime Report. The center indicated it received a record number of complaints from Americans last year (791,790) with reported losses exceeding $4.1 billion. It was an increase of more than 300,000 complaints compared to 2019. Complaints ranged from phishing scams to compromised emails, extortion and ransomware.
When I read last year that employees at layoff- and buyout-battered Tribune Publishing newspapers (including the Hartford Courant) received mock phishing emails promising bonuses of $5,000 to 10,000, my heart sank.
I can only imagine how the journalists themselves felt.
