Book Corner: Shining the spotlight on seven page-turners by Black writers

By Tracy McPeck If you were asked to name a few mystery/thriller writers off the top of your head, who would you name? Chances are you’d instantly go to popular names like James Patterson, David Baldacci and Janet Evanovich. These mainstream authors get big advances and prominent display space in bookstores when their latest novels are released, perpetuating their continued popularity. This means that many authors, especially writers of color, routinely go undiscovered, leaving volumes of scintillating suspense out of a well-deserved spotlight. Though I believe everyone should make a point of reading diverse books all year long, African American History Month is a great time to shine the spotlight on Black authors. And because I’m on a mystery/suspense/thriller kick lately, that’s what I’m going to focus on today.

And each year, narrowing down my favorites gets harder. Of the 150-plus books I read this year, these are the top standouts. 1. “Your House Will Pay” by Steph Cha (Ecco): In Los Angeles, a Korean-American family and an African-American family are torn apart by history and violence in this engrossing story about race, redemption and forgiveness. Racial tensions rear up, even with characters who honestly believe they are not bigoted. Each family learns uncomfortable truths about themselves as they try to rise above the past.
