The tragic death of Kelly Washie, who was struck and killed by a transport truck on Dec. 31, has prompted a big discussion about safety on the road between Yellowknife and Behchoko.
In the legislature Monday, Monfwi MLA Jackson Lafferty explained that Washie had wanted to use the restroom, and since there are no washrooms along the road, he had to go outside. He was at the back of the vehicle when a truck went by raising a cloud of snow. Couldn t see anything, Lafferty said. That was when Mr. Washie was struck by this transport truck.

Following a fatal accident on Highway 3 on New Year s Eve, Monfwi MLA Jackson Lafferty is calling once again on the N.W.T. to provide cell phone coverage in the area. It is a safety issue and I certainly hope the government will act on it.

A Behchokǫ̀, N.W.T., man killed in a fatal New Year s Eve collision on Highway 3 is being remembered as a kind man with a great sense of humour.
And Kelly Washie s sister is also pushing for cellphone service along the stretch of highway where her brother died.
Washie, 45, was in a vehicle about 25 kilometres outside of Yellowknife on Highway 3 with his sister Joyce, when they pulled over to the side of the road so he could have a cigarette outside.
