[ laughs ] [ dance music playing ] so visit progressive.com today. i call this one the robox. we are following some breaking news. republicans in the senate just voted down a bill brought forward by democrats that would have extended unemployment benefits for three months for roughly 1.7 million americans who are unemployed. in a 58-40 vote, closure as it s called was not invoked. our kelly o donnell called it at the top of the hour. it s still at this point, according to kelly o, there is a chance it could be brought forward once again in the upper chamber. but even if it was to somehow get passed there, its future in
funding. this is what speaker john boehner said this morning. i take it you re not prepared to submit a clean bill? there are not enough 1r0e9 vo pass a clean cr. the administration is pushing back saying there are enough votes. dan pfeiffer tweeting if there are not votes to open the government as speaker boehner says, why is he so afraid to call vote and prove it. who is right here, kelly o? it is all about looking at the details and the calendar. certainly there have been a number of republicans who oefrtd course of the last week or so have been asked by reporters and constituents would they support a reopening of the government with this as we ve been calling it clean cr. funding for the government with nothing to do with the health care law. but public attempts to reporters or constituent might not be exactly the same thing as the moment when a vote is called and being held account for that
lines. i was stunned by this vote because never before had there been any controversy in all of more than a decade and a half. kelly o donnell is joining us live. what exactly changed? what is it that the republicans are arguing for not supporting this bill, which that have in the past? it s not exactly the same bill. it s the amendment process which can always cause some trouble because it sort of the fine print aspect of these things. both parties do support the violence against women act which does put money into federal things like battered women shelter. it has been bipartisan for a long time. democrats have added a few things that deal with same sex couples getting these privileges and that would allow a woman that s an illegal immigrant that may have been the victim of a crime to be able to apply for a visa to stay in the country
today. the vote was 51-48. there were an awful lot of men who voted to table the blunt amendment today. i hope that we can now put this issue aside. we can get back to the bill that we re supposed to be working on which is highway funding, investing in our infrastructure. that s what i think people across the country want us to do. they want us to address the economy, so we can get people working again and making people feel better about their futures and their prosperity. i think it s way past time when we should be discussing whether women can have access to contraceptives or not. we heard from kelly o donnell reiterating this is not over. mr. boehner wanting a bipartisan deal. what do you think he means by that?
