Parts of the southeast United States have reported gas shortages and rising prices in the wake of a ransomware attack on the Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline. While it may seem logical to attribute similarly rising prices in Washington to that attack as well, it’s actually a different story entirely on the West Coast.
According to data from AAA Washington, the state’s gas prices are up more than a dollar year-over-year. While that may seem significant, it’s less due to a far-off pipeline and more the product of 2020 being an outlier of a year.

Washington State Patrol say impaired driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, or polydrug impaired driving, has increased significantly this year and become the most common DUI arrests. Q13 s Grace Lim reports.
SEATTLE - Drivers under the influence of two or more substances, or polydrugs, are now the most common impaired drivers on our roads, according to Washington State Patrol (WSP)
Trooper Joe Armstrong with WSP said he s seen more DUIs involving drugs recently. I arrested 35 DUIs on day shift last year so I get two to three a month. At least one every three weeks out of the month, said Armstrong.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, over 3,000 people died as a result of distracted driving in 2019. That’s a 10% increase from 2018. And on a typical day, more than 700 people are injured in distracted driving incidents.
In 2017, Washington state passed a driving under the influence of electronics act. It might sound silly, but Kelly Just with AAA told Tracy says that their studies show it takes about 27 seconds for your brain to refocus attention after you put down your phone or finish with your voice to text system.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission is calling on everyone to refocus on preventing crashes caused by distracted driving, which includes when drivers hold their cell phones.
From April 1-19, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WSTC) says more than 130 police agencies are adding patrols and looking for drivers districted by their electronic devices. Drivers can also receive a “dangerously distracted” citation for committing other traffic violations due to any type of distraction.
