A Galesburg man was sentenced to 5 years in prison on Thursday for pleading guilty to aggravated battery of a peace officer. 30-year-old Kelly Hawkinson was facing a number of charges that were dropped in exchange for his plea. The aggravated battery of a police officer charge stems from a November 2021 incident in which Hawkinson was in a fight with another male. An off-duty officer heard the incident and called for police. Hawkinson began threatening the off-duty officer and followed him to an apartment demanding an apology. Hawkinson head-butted and punched the officer several times before saying he was going to get a gun. Hawkinson also was facing pending charges for other incidents including aggravated battery to a victim over the age of 60, He was already on probation after being found guilty in 2021 of criminal damage to property between $10,000 and $100,0000. After Thursday's hearing, Hawkinson was immediately taken to the Knox County Jail to await placement in an Illinois
