In the early 1950s, when she was in her forties, she was bitten by an unidentified bug in the backyard while she was talking to a neighbor across the fence. When she returned to the kitchen, her forehead was bleeding. The doctors never came up with a definitive diagnosis, but after that she almost never left the house. And she worried about everything the state of the world, traveling, her children.
