The repopulation process began Thursday for the town of Gasquet, evacuated earlier this month due to the Kelly Fire in Del Norte County. This fire is part of the Smith River Complex. Friday morning the complex was at 83,974 acres with 8% containment.
The Smith River Complex will see rainfall this weekend, but not before “near critical fire weather conditions” that will play out Wednesday with gusts of north winds blowing over the now 75,000 acre group of fires impacting Del Norte County. Governor Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for the complex Tuesday, following a similar declaration from county officials on Aug. 18. The complex is at 7% containment.

The Smith River complex has now grown to 83,974 acres in Del Norte County and southern Oregon. Following a gusty 24 hours, firefighting efforts will be aided by some higher humidity and forecasted rain on the complex in the coming days, which is made up of at least 12 fires sparked by lightning over two weeks ago. The complex is 8% contained.
