Earth Day talk: Gardening for a Better Planet, Home Landscape as Habitat

Thursday, April 22, 2021 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm The St. George Conservation Commission is offering “Gardening for a Better Planet: Home Landscape as Habitat” with Kelly Corbin, ecological landscape designer and consultant, on Thursday, April 22, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., via Zoom. Many approaches to sustainability come from asking how can we be less bad for the Earth? In this presentation, Corbin will share her ”do more good” approach to sustainable landscaping. She will offer simple and effective methods to encourage pollinators, create bountiful habitat, and even reduce your carbon footprint. Her approach can decrease the time and effort it takes to maintain gardens and lawns while increasing your appreciation of the diverse natural world around you, according to the Town of St. George, in a news release.

Knox County YMCA Annual Support Campaign Kicks Off Wednesday

The Knox County YMCA is kicking off their annual support campaign this Wednesday. It will be a virtual kickoff this year. The Y does not turn any prospective member away due to lack of ability to pay. This campaign helps fund that effort. Knox County YMCA COO Kelly Corbin joined Tom Meredith and Tyler Gumm on "Galesburg's Morning News" to talk about the campaign and the Y.

Yearly YMCA campaign to go virtual this year

February 22, 2021 The Knox County YMCA is holding a virtual kick-off on Wednesday, February 24th, to its annual campaign. Being a non-profit, the Y relies on membership dues and donations to offer new and existing services – including services with families that are unable to afford a YMCA membership. COO Kelly Corbin says 100% of the money donated goes towards people in need. “Your money goes directly to that cause – (families) that want to get better and get well and whose children want to learn to play soccer or learn to swim,” Corbin said. “Our goal this year is $120,000. It’s grown quite a bit over the years. We usually give away over $400,000 in scholarships and subsidies each year. It definitely helps offset that a little bit and help us work our mission.” The annual campaign typically involves a dinner where guests hear YMCA success stories, but this year, it’s a virtual kick-off.
