Several Acadiana principals in running for state Principal of the Year
The Acadiana region boasts several principals in the running for state Principal of the Year, with five of the 24 semifinalists for 2022 Louisiana Principal of the Year hailing from the eight-parish region.
Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes all are represented in the list of principal semifinalists released by the Louisiana Department of Education this week.

Ginger Richard, principal of Green T. Lindon Elementary School in Youngsville, was named the district Elementary Principal of the Year before moving on to the state competition.
Richard has been an educator in the Lafayette Parish School System for 17 years, starting as a teacher at Ridge Elementary where she was voted Teacher of the Year in 2008-09.

OPELOUSAS, La. St. Landry Parish School District (SLPSD) announced Wednesday that Kellie Rabalais, principal at Palmetto Elementary School, has claimed a spot on the Louisiana Principal of the Year Semi-Finalist list. Each year, the Principal of the Year Program recognizes and rewards an elementary, middle, and high school principal who has demonstrated outstanding school leadership.
Rabalais was born in Opelousas but grew in Plaisance, Louisiana. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and her masterâs degree in Educational Leadership from The American College of Education.
Rabalais started her teaching career at Grand Coteau Elementary in 2000, teaching second grade. At Grand Coteau, she taught second grade for eight years, 3rd grade for a year, and 4th grade for a year and was the administrative assistant. The 48 semifinalists are elementary, middle and high school educators from school systems across the state. Finalists will be selected from this group and announced live at the 2021 Teacher Leader Summit during the plenary event on May 25 in New Orleans.
âOur teachers and leaders have been doing hero s work over the past year to educate during the pandemic and a historically active hurricane season,â said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. âCongratulations to these 48 semifinalists. Our state is in a better place today because of their service to children and families.â
