A developer who bought the land wants them gone. At the same time, it has been revealed that the matching set at the town’s southern entrance were erected outside of the district, in neighbouring Carterton, and without the correct permissions. The sculptures, which feature nine deliberately rusted symbols depicting Wairarapa life, loom over the Waingawa bridge and neighbouring Opaki Rd further up the highway. The original budget of $35,000 spiralled to a forecast of $92,000. At the time, council staff blamed extra crane hire, landscaping, metalwork, and structural engineering costs for the bill. An internal review never made public but shared with councillors said money for completing the project was frozen.
