Hookem Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was hired, in large part, to fix the Texas offense. His Alabama offenses utilized wide receivers to perfection, culminating in a 2020 Heisman Trophy for DeVonta Smith. At Texas, Sarkisian inherits highly-recruited talent at the position, but it s a spot that has lacked consistency since Devin Duvernay’s departure.  On campus FYI: Five stars, from Cuero; ranked 34th overall nationally, No. 2 athlete in 2019 class Whittington was a five-star athlete after leading Cuero to a Class 4A state championship as a senior, breaking Eric Dickerson’s 4A record with 334 rushing yards in the win. In that game, Whittington accounted for 377 total yards, six touchdowns, 11 tackles and one interception.

Hookem Texas disappointing 2020 season ultimately led to the termination of head coach Tom Herman, who was replaced by Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. Herman was hired before the 2017 season as an offensive guru with limited head coaching experience. Herman was tasked with fixing the program, but he failed. And that failure was felt on the recruiting trail in the 2021 cycle way before athletic director Chris Del Conte terminated his contract.  Texas 2021 class ranked 17th in the country and second in the Big 12. The offensive group consisted of one four-star prospect an out-of-state receiver. Failing to sign a single four-star Texan on the head coach s side of the ball was a loud condemnation of the on-field product.

During that Zoom call with reporters, Herman emphasized that he and his staff kept the overall size of the class relatively small in order to add graduate or other transfers with the still-looming possibility of a one-time blanket transfer waiver.

Published on February 3, 2021 at 9:29 pm Steve Sarkisian inherited 19 signees in the class of 2021 when he took over as head coach Jan. 2, but he and his newly assembled staff inked four new signatures by the end of national signing day.  Texas added four-star cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem and a pair of three-stars, wide receiver Keithron Lee and defensive end David Abiara, on Wednesday afternoon. The Longhorns finished the 2021 recruiting cycle with the No. 17-ranked class in the nation according to 247Sports, their worst ranking since 2017 in former head coach Tom Herman’s transition class.  Despite the lower ranking, Sarkisian said the real value of this class won’t be known until years down the line.
