GPS Seniors Inducted Into Cum Laude Thursday, May 6, 2021 As the GPS Class of 2021 completes its senior year, it first recognizes and installs its newest members into Cum Laude Society. Ten seniors join the company of their high-achieving sisters before them as their chosen faculty members pay tribute to their time at GPS. Graduating classmates and family members joined the inductees in the Frierson Theatre while underclassmen, teachers, and friends joined virtually via livestream. English Department Chair Katy Berotti welcomed those in attendance and explained the importance of the day. “The national Cum Laude Society was organized over a century ago to recognize extraordinary scholastic achievement in secondary schools. Each girl we induct today earned this honor by excelling in rigorous GPS courses,” she said.

K9 law enforcement partners strut their stuff

Rex is a barker, Bull is a spaz, Milo is focused and Murray is a bit of a goofball. As one would expect with a gathering of dogs, there was a wide range of canine personalities on display at the Police K9 Challenge last weekend. Law enforcement from around the region, including Utah and Wyoming, along with their K9 partners, took part in the fun competition at Delta High School. The K9 competition included obedience, an obstacle course, sniffing for narcotics, speed and bite training. It was a chance to show off the K9 skills and for handlers to work with the dogs in a different setting.

ACC Commission discusses plans for Clayton Street construction, new Oconee River access point

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission discussed adjusted plans for construction on Clayton Street that would provide more pedestrian sidewalk space, a new river access point and eliminating hostile architecture downtown during a work session Tuesday evening. Two ACC Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program administrators, Keith Sanders and Diana Jackson, presented the commission with the newly updated plans that the commission is set to vote on during their next voting session. The adjustment would eliminate most plans to add planters, except at sidewalk bump-outs and corners. It would also add motorcycle parking spaces and include stairs in needed areas, among other things.
