He was standing in the basement of the Auckland High Court, as two police officers shone torches over a hard drive, while a third smashed it with a hammer. Hager recently donated the remains of the drive to Wellington Museum. It was a strange and dramatic end to a drawn-out legal battle that ensued over documents seized in a police raid following the publication of his book “Dirty Politics”. The book concerned a dirty tricks campaign run out of the office of then prime minister John Key, through Cameron Slater’s notorious Whaleoil blog.
