Maritime Aquarium Invites Submissions–And Online Voting–For Nudibranch Photo Contest Written by Dave Sigworth
Professional and amateur dive photographers are invited to enter their portraits of colorful, ornate sea slugs called nudibranchs in a special online photo contest sponsored by The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.
The Aquarium’s “Nudibranch Photo Contest” is tied to a current special exhibit at the Connecticut attraction that features live nudibranchs, a group of shell-less mollusks sought out by divers because of their brilliant colors and striking forms.
“Finding – and photographing – a nudibranch on a reef can be like discovering a tiny gorgeous gem,” said Aquarium spokesman Dave Sigworth. “As exceptional and appreciated as they are, nudibranchs also are vulnerable to ocean warming and ocean acidification, which is the message in our exhibit, ‘A Slug’s Life: Facing the Climate Endgame.’ We hope that this photo contest – like the exhi

A lettuce nudibranch (Tridachia crispata), one of the species displayed in “A Slug’s Life: Facing the Climate Endgame,” a special exhibit open now through June 13 in The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. In conjunction with the exhibit, The Maritime Aquarium is hosting a Nudibranch Photo Contest, which will run through April 23. The photo with the most online votes will win a one-year membership to any aquarium or zoo in the U.S accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). Discover the adaptations of animals from ocean reefs and freshwater streams and the important warnings they can tell us in “A Slug’s Life: Facing the Climate Endgame,” an exhibit that showcases live creatures with their representations in art, opening Saturday at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.
The exhibit will be open through June 13 and is free with aquarium admission.
Stars of the new exhibit are an order of mollusks called nudibranchs known for their striking forms and brilliant colors. Nicknamed “sea slugs,” nudibranchs occur in some 3,000 species in oceans all around the world. Some two dozen are found in Long Island Sound.
