ICE detainees, officers involved in melee at N.J. jail, officials say Updated 10:05 PM; Two officers were hurt in a melee with federal immigration detainees at the Bergen County Jail, a county sheriff’s office spokeswoman said Tuesday. The confrontation occurred Monday after detainees were spotted passing contraband between cells, according to Bergen County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Keisha McLean, who said a search revealed banned items, including an “incendiary device.” “Detainees were given lawful orders by officers to disperse, at which point the group corralled around officers and refused to lock in,” McLean said in an email. “For the safety of the officers, assistance was requested, a facility lockdown was ordered to provide adequate response to regain order.”

NorthJersey.com Months after the coronavirus surged through the state s prison population, county jails in North Jersey are off to a slow start inoculating thousands of inmates and immigration detainees as supplies of the vaccine remain limited. Officials in Bergen, Passaic and Morris counties this week said they re still in the planning stages of inoculations. The Essex and Hudson county jails have administered shots to eligible members of their populations, though so far they have reached only a fraction of their inmates and staffs. We have been very proactive, and we think it s important, Phil Alagia, the chief of staff for Essex County Executive Joseph DiVencenzo, said last week. It keeps our officers safe, and the people that get released ultimately go back to the community.

ICE protester at NJ jail accused of attacking, threatening cops HACKENSACK A protester outside the Bergen County Jail was charged with trespassing, assault and drug charges on Tuesday after threatening to kill sheriff s officers, according to Sheriff Anthony Cureton. During what Cureton described as a peaceful protest outside the facility, Amanda Torres, 26, of Queens, refused to comply with orders not to cross barricades at the entrance. Torres instead jumped on the barrier and screamed she was a boxer and would f k all y all up, according to Cureton. She paced back and forth using profanity against officers and was warned that if she crossed the barricade again she would be arrested, Cureton said. As officers walked away, she crossed the barrier, he said.
