(Mainichi/Hiroshi Odanaka) KYOTO Plans are afoot to recommence municipal bus services in this west Japan city s Yamashina Ward, the only one of the city s 11 wards where buses were suspended after the opening of the municipal subway s Tozai Line in 1997. Keihan Bus Co., based in Kyoto, has been running buses in the ward since the city government abolished its routes when the subway line began operations through the area. But falling income amid the coronavirus pandemic led the private firm to reduce the number of services on some routes in December 2020, and locals requested the return of municipal buses. The city government is already talking to Keihan Bus about potential joint route operation.

Beginning in 2021, Keihan Bus and Kansai Electric Power will launch the first batch of 4 BYD J6 buses on Kyoto’s famous sightseeing bus line (Kyoto Station - Shichijo Keihan-mae - Umekoji - Hotel Emion Kyoto), as part of a five-year demonstration operation to further promote pure electric public transportation in Japan. This will also become the country’s first loop line operated solely by electric buses.
