SAPPORO Sapporo faces staunch public opposition to hosting the Winter Olympics in 2030 in the aftermath of far-reaching scandals over the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games and is even considering delaying its bid by four years.
TOKYO Yasuhiro Yamashita, the head of the Japanese Olympic Committee, acknowledged the biggest stumbling block to holding the Olympics is the billions in costs.
Japan’s Olympic leader said concerns over the huge costs of another Winter Games in Sapporo may be affecting support. Salt Lake City also is in the running for the 2030 or 2034 Olympics. Vancouver, Canada; and Barcelona, Spain, along with the Pyrenees region are also bidding.
