Canoe regatta's cinder blocks damaged Big Island coral colonies

State officials say that cinder blocks placed in the ocean as lane markers for a canoe regatta last weekend damaged about 50 to 60 coral colonies in Hawaii island’s Kailua Bay.

DLNR: 100 coral colonies were damaged by lane markers from canoe regatta : Maui Now

Approximately 50-60 coral colonies sustained a range of minimal-to-significant damage from 60-pound cinder blocks placed in the ocean for a canoe regatta on Hawaiʻi Island last weekend, officials said. Dive teams with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources spent Tuesday documenting and photographing damage at Kailua Bay.
