GIBBON, Neb. (AP) - Sandhill cranes making their annual mid-migration stop in the Central Platte Valley during the next two months will see things in a new light, at least the ones flying to and from overnight river roosts at Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary southwest of Gibbon.
As the cranes continued to lounge in warmer weather areas such as the south Texas Gulf Coast, Dawson Public Power District linemen braved below-zero windchills Tuesday to install new Avian Collision Avoidance Systems for two power lines that cross the main channel of the Platte River.
Police: Woman injured in Kearney house fire has died

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) A woman critically injured last week in a Kearney house fire has died, officials there said.
Winona ‘Jody’ Londer, 74, of Kearney, died Friday at a Lincoln burn unit a day after she was pulled from the burning house, the Kearney Hub reported.
Officials said the fire was reported Thursday morning by a neighbor who spotted heavy smoke coming from the home. Firefighters soon arrived and pulled Londer from burning house. Two police officers who initially responded also were treated for smoke inhalation.

The Nebraska Fire Marshal determined the fire started in the kitchen where a stove burner had been turned on and ignited combustible materials near it. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) - A woman remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday a day after a Kearney house fire that injured her and two police officers, officials said.
The fire was reported Thursday morning by a neighbor who spotted heavy smoke coming from the home, the Kearney Hub reported. The neighbor said he saw officers who were first to arrive kick open a door to the home, and firefighters soon arrived and pulled a woman in her 70s from the burning house.
