Chris Perez didn’t get many opportunities to swing the bat during his seven big-league seasons. As a short reliever who played primarily in the American League, that was to be expected. Somewhat less expected was what happened when he did have a chance to dig into the batters box.
“I had two [plate appearances], and I’m bitter about one of them,” Perez told me recently. “In 2008, my rookie year with St. Louis, we were in Florida at the old stadium, playing the Marlins. I came into the game in the eighth inning with one out, and got a double play with the bases loaded. When I went back to the dugout, Tony La Russa told me, ‘Hey, Chris, you’re still in there. Stay focused, because you’ve got the ninth.’”

The Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed two more members on Thursday, with Katsuji Kawashima, who managed Japan during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and author Kazuo Sayama making up the class of 2021.
Both were selected as part of the special committee.
“This is a great honor for me,” Kawashima said. “I’m very grateful for the support of the leaders who raised me as a player in high school and college and the teammates who competed with me and the players and staff who fought with me as a manager.”
No one was chosen from the Players Selection Committee for the second year in a row. There was also no one elected from the Expert Committee. The last time no one was selected from either committee was in 1998.

Before Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) became the first African American to debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1947, Black ballplayers were allowed to play only in their own leagues which, by today s standards, bore the racist name of the Negro Leagues.
The latter played unofficial games with the MLB and proved quite formidable.
Nonfiction author Kazuo Sayama quotes Negro League ace pitcher Satchel Paige (1906-1982) as noting to the effect, To me, a Black team beating a white team is no news because the Negro Leagues are superior.
