A Calgary racial justice advocate says former police officer Derek Chauvin’s conviction in the murder of George Floyd leaves him feeling “optimistic and hopeful” for the future.
Kay Layton, executive director for Calgary’s Black Lives Matter chapter, said he teared up when a 12-member jury found Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the deadly arrest of Floyd.

“What excites me the most about this verdict is we get to see a generation of kids who get to witness justice this time around. I didn’t get that chance. My parents didn’t get that chance. My grandparents didn’t get that chance,” said Layton.
To prevent discrimination against Black renters, real estate agents say cities should issue stronger protections, such as not requiring photo ID until after the bid is accepted.
