Hawaii Declares State of Emergency After Heavy Rains, Floods, and Dam Overflow
Hawaii Governor David Ige declared an emergency in the state after heavy rains brought floods, landslides and fear of dam failures, prompting evacuations in at least two counties, while flood advisories stayed in effect for a second day.
The move came after a dam overflowed on the island of Maui, forcing evacuations and destroying homes, with the dam’s “unsatisfactory” condition leading to it being scheduled for removal this year, the land department has said. The governor of Hawaii declared a state of emergency after severe flooding across the state s islands prompted evacuations, damaged homes and raised alarm over a possible dam failure.
Gov. David Ige signed the proclamation on Tuesday to release state general funds to help those impacted by the extreme weather, which he said is expected to continue until Friday. The order covers the counties of Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao and Kauai, as well as the city and county of Honolulu.

Gov. David Ige of Hawaii on Tuesday declared a state of emergency citing “extensive damage” across the state following torrential rain and flooding that prompted evacuations orders on the islands of Maui and Oahu and damaged at least a half dozen homes. The declaration, Mr. Ige said, would make state funds quickly available for those in need. Weather concerns hovered over the state overnight. A flood advisory was in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday.
