Louisiana Tech University’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student organization hosted the 35th Annual ASCE Concrete Canoe Society-wide Final Competition on Louisiana Tech’s campus and at Hoogland Lake last weekend.
The event, which runs Friday through Sunday, will begin on Louisiana Tech’s campus, as concrete canoe teams make oral presentations and surveying and sustainability teams complete tasks in the Integrated Engineering and Science Building and University Hall. On the final day, teams will race concrete canoes and present a Surveying Expo at Lincoln Parish Park before returning to campus for an awards banquet.
This weekend, Louisiana Tech University will host more than 400 students and guests as about 40 student teams from around the world participate in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Concrete Canoe Competition+, which includes Concrete Canoe, Sustainable Solutions, and Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute Surveying competitions.
The Louisiana Tech University student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) notched two first-place wins and a third-place finish at the 2021 Deep South Conference.
The team won first place in the Sustainable Solutions Competition and with the Mead Paper, and third place in the Environmental Competition of the virtual conference.
After the 2020 competition was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19 last spring, the team was determined to make the 2021 season a successful one. When students returned to campus in the Fall 2020 Quarter, the team began developing strategies to compete in the upcoming 2021 ASCE competitions while practicing social distancing.
