it was seven days after katrina hit. new orleans was devastated and destroyed. it was pretty depressing. and we d been flying around. and they actually were in the middle of the road, the waters had receded enough to where they were waist high. the family was in the road. and so they lowered me down between some tree and some wires. and i asked them how they were. and they said they were fine. i said you want to get out of here, they said sure. so i took them up one by one on the hoist. i picked up the little girl. we went up the hoist. as we were going up she looking and pointing going there s my house. you know and that smile that she had was there. and so i was like, this is pretty cool. yeah. i go by down and pick up her whole family. we get back in the helicopter and her mom is scared. the helicopter is very loud, they re shaky. there s a lot going on. and so her mom is like, oh. so the little girl is rubbing her on the back going it s okay
your way and had this great local product. but they were also rebounding after the deepwater horizon oil spill. you guys went down there. some of your folks and helped them out. tell us about that, and particularly one of the things you wrote about here on the blog that explained that it was different being out in the field in some of the case studies you get. absolutely. i think what s special about saute your way and carl and lawless turner and the business they re running is it represents two larger ideas we see. first is the story of new orleans, right. tim williams says when katrina hit, the whole city became a start-up. you can t talk about revitalization in america without talking about new orleans. and i think the city teaches us so much about how to come back from disaster and how to come back from hardship. so this company in this city is a great test case, i think, to show something to the rest of the country about resilience.
supported cochran for so long long, primarily along the coast of mississippi, and people there will understand that because they knew that is where katrina hit. one of the things that cochran has been known for, i know that you re angry at washington but washington can help you, i helped you by bringing federal dollars here not coast, to help you with katrina. that didn t seem to really help there. the anti-washington wave was so strong. one of their interesting tidbit. the county that his republican challenger chris mcdaniel is from, jones county, that went overwhelmingly for mcdaniel. this is actually a candidate that has a history of serious independence. jones county after the south deseeded during the civil war, from the confederacy. that shows you all of the dynamics that thad cochran is up against here. i m thinking back, you re in mississippi this morning. you were in kentucky just last month covering senator mitch mcconnell s race. what is different about this
in a way they don t have the luxury. the secret in new orleans, and i think people finally understood this, we have the most culture, you know what our music sounds like, you know what our food tastes like, and that culture was under environmental assault and it really rallied to a way and that s what really drew the city together is to protect the culture of new orleans. 809 restaurants today that katrina hit, today there are like 1,350. how many is that come on down! the book is love & war, please read the excerpt of it
