The current corp yard at 945 W. 14th Street, is within a tsunami zone and has aged well beyond current structural standards – the newest of the buildings was completed in the 1980s, with other buildings seeing use since the 1950s – according to city staff. The city moved forward with the purchase, noting some construction impacts will be difficult to avoid – namely noise – but they will try and minimize disruptions to funerals and gatherings on the rest of the cemetery.
The city of Eureka is looking to buy a portion of undeveloped land owned by Ocean View Cemetery to build an operations complex. The city says the existing yard needs to be replaced and moved to higher ground.
