Leaders of Alaska’s largest hospitals say that a steep rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations is straining a health care system that’s already struggling with staffing shortages and a burned out workforce.
In a July 27 news conference organized by the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association, the group’s CEO, Jared Kosin, said that many Alaska hospitals, especially in Anchorage, are at or near capacity.
He said that COVID-19 hospitalizations have reached December 2020 levels, and that the increase comes as hospitals are already dealing with the usual summer uptick in patients, plus hiring challenges.
“At this rate, we re tracking towards a significant care event. And on the downside here, the health care system is a far more fragile state than it was before. We have less room, we have less staff, and we have a burned out workforce. On the upside, we have an effective tool in play and that s the vaccine,” Kosin said.

4-6 lemons and/or limes (a mix of both is best, but one or the other will work)
1 lb. frozen halibut (tilapia and red snapper work too)
1 tsp. ginger (shredded or cubed)
1 clove garlic
pepper
small amount of hot pepper (I think I used 1-2 jalapenos, but took the seeds out first)
1 cup celery chopped into cubes
1 cup onion chopped well
lots of cilantro

The entire Kuskokwim River will open full-time to subsistence fishing with gillnets beginning at 12:01 a.m. on July 31. At that time, gillnet restrictions on the river will be liberalized to include any size mesh, and nets can stretch up to 50 fathoms in length.
Data from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game shows that king, chum, and sockeye salmon have almost entirely passed Bethel, and coho is now the dominant salmon species in the lower Kuskokwim.
The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, in consultation with the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, instated gillnet restrictions on June 1 to conserve king salmon. As the summer progressed, conservation concerns extended to the river’s record low chum salmon run.
