SAGINAW, MI - Ten staff members of Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw rolled up their sleeves in a special ceremony Wednesday to receive the hospital’s first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
“What we’ve done here today basically will, in my opinion, change the world,” said physician’s assistant Steven Berge, who serves in the emergency department at Ascension St. Mary’s.
Ascension St. Mary’s received the newly approved Moderna vaccine the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 23. Both the new Moderna vaccine and the Pfizer shot require two doses several weeks apart. The second dose must be from the same company as the first. A major difference is the storage requirements - the Pfizer shot must be stored in special ultra-cold freezers while the Moderna product can be stored in regular vaccine storage equipment.
