Kathy Silverberg Florida needs to do better by its children. They are a relatively scarce resource in this state, making up just 20.8% of the population. Only four states –Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont – and the District of Columbia have a lower proportion of children; meanwhile, kids make up 24% of America s overall population.  Florida, which is America s third-most populous state, is known as the retirement state with a projected 4.6 million residents 65 and older representing about 200,000 more people than the 18-and-under demographic.  But children in Florida are not getting the health care, education and economic security that they deserve –and that can give them opportunities to grow into happy, productive adults. That’s according to the Anne E. Casey Foundation’s annual Kids Count Data Book, which was released this week to coincide with Child Tax Credit Awareness Day.
