Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and her team are among recipients of the Edmonton Area Rotary Clubs’ integrity awards.
On Monday, the Rotary Clubs will recognize 16 residents in the Edmonton area who have “given of themselves to better humanity” and improve the community. The 17th Annual Rotary Integrity Awards recognizes non-rotarians who exemplify the Rotary motto of “service above self.”

The recipients of the integrity awards are recognized as having led a considerate lifestyle, living with purpose, shown bravery, generosity and selfishness “while making a contribution warranting recognition.”
Last July, an encampment appeared on an unassuming two-acre plot of grass in Edmonton, almost in the shadow of the Alberta Legislature Building. A collective of outreach workers and advocacy groups erected a teepee and a few tents and started a sacred fire. They were there to increase visibility of the sometimes brutal treatment of unhoused people and to aid Indigenous people in a country where, due to colonization, they are more likely to be homeless than non-Indigenous people are.
Camp members take care of one another, including braiding hair and wrapping feet in plastic to protect against frostbite.
