Construction on Columbiaâs new Gateway Plaza is set to begin in January at the southeast intersection of Broadway and Providence Road.
The Mayorâs Taskforce for Bicentennial Celebration Planning met Thursday to discuss next steps for the 2021 bicentennial celebration events, including Gateway Plaza.
Kathy Becker, executive director for the Downtown Community Improvement District, confirmed the Gateway Plaza will begin construction in January. Becker said the plaza will spell out âColumbiaâ in 5-feet-tall letters with the âoâ being an 8-feet-tall orb. According to previous Missourian reporting, the orb will contain words and statements describing Columbia.
The plaza will be five feet higher than the middle of the intersection, said Mike Snyder, Parks and Recreation planning and development superintendent. This was a recent change in the plans, so the plaza would be visible from a longer distance.

truck. 57-year-old george marshall was killed as the man got away. his family is in shock. i don t even think he was doing more than yelling at the truck. i heard that when the truck saw him he ran him over. reporter: marshall s brother was with him. police say he was dragged during the incident but is expected to survive. when the suspect got into his vehicle, attempted to leave the scene one of the employees was run over by the truck, another was dragged a short distance. reporter: police caught up with and arrested the suspect. they also recovered the truck he was driving but it s not enough for this family. marshall was married to his wife for five-years. he is described as a great role model for his stepdaughter. he lived a good life. he was consistent. he woke up at four, went to works, was here until three or four in the afternoon, helped with homework. reporter: and the suspect is charged with murder, other various assault charges and burglary. cheryl conn
