IndyStar’s investigation into police dog bites has won a prestigious news award by the White House Correspondents’ Association.
IndyStar’s collaborative investigation, “Mauled: When Police Dogs are Weapons,” with The Marshall Project, AL.com and Invisible Institute, has earned the Katharine Graham Award for Courage and Accountability.
The annual award “honors in-depth news coverage of subjects and events of significant national or regional importance by an individual or newsgathering team.”
The investigation has prompted changes in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s policy regarding K-9 units, after IndyStar investigative reporter Ryan Martin revealed the agency has the highest number of dog bites among police departments in the largest 20 U.S. cities.
