Don t demonise Jeremy Corbyn; he has a proud record of success as Labour leader – Yorkshire Post Letters

Submitting. Is it that, with his message of hope for a happier, less austere future, he attracted young people into politics? Pressure is growing on Sir Keir Starmer who succeeded Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in April 2020. Is it that in two years he presided over a sharp decrease in anti-Semitism among Labour supporters? Or is it that in the 2017 election he wiped out Theresa May’s majority? After that, powerful right-wing forces took fright and intensified the campaign to demonise Mr Corbyn, which continues to this day. From: Nigel Bywater, Oak Grove, Morley. THE result in the Hartlepool by-election was a kick in the
teeth for all the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster (Kath Pinnock, The Yorkshire Post, May 7).

Grenfell cladding scandal sees leaseholders betrayed and facing ruin – Kath Pinnock

Submitting. It is hard to truly appreciate the absolute fear of that happening. Yet, that is just the dreadful situation over one million of our fellow citizens find themselves facing now. Baroness Kath Pinnock of Cleckheaton is a Lib Dem peer and former leader of Kirklees Council. This situation is the consequence of the cladding scandal. Four years ago there was a very serious fire in the Grenfell Tower in London in which 72 people died. The fire spread so quickly that residents were not able to evacuate. The public inquiry has established
that the cladding on the external walls of the tower block was not fully fire resistant and actually helped the fire to spread.

Plan for 267 homes on farmland near Cleckheaton is refused | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

COUNCILLORS have thrown out plans to build 267 houses on almost 30 acres of farmland at Hunsworth Lane in Cleckheaton. The scheme by Harron Homes was refused by a tight 4-3 vote at Kirklees Council’s Strategic Planning Committee today. However the same meeting saw more than 100 new homes approved for 11 acres of land close to the M62 motorway off Whitechapel Road in Cleckheaton. Conservatives and Lib Dems raised concerns about the layout of the Hunsworth proposal, the impact on local roads, flooding and the failure to find a mineshaft that exists somewhere on the land. That led to worries that future homes built on the land could suffer from subsidence, with owners left to “pick up the pieces”.

Decision due over 400 homes on former green belt in Cleckheaton | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

PLANS to build almost 400 homes across two former green belt sites in Cleckheaton are being recommended for approval this week. Both the site at Merchant Fields in Hunsworth, and Whitechapel Road, were earmarked for development in Kirklees Council s Local Plan for development in 2019. The larger of the two sites, Merchant Fields, involves a scheme for 267 homes by Harron Homes, and more than 100 residents have objected to it. In the plans, Harron Homes said the site would “create a sustainable residential development that supports the existing community and respects the positive features of the site”. Initially the application was to build a total of 298 homes on the 12 hectare site, which spans five adjoining fields of unused agricultural grazing land.
