Brandon Marchant was not a threat to society at the time of his arrest and was apparently in need of medical care. Having him transferred from hospital where he was under the care of trained medical staff to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre, a facility with known staffing shortages, no infirmary and no specialized care available was irresponsible and unnecessary and could have been a major factor in his death.
I look forward to the Office of the Solicitor General’s findings in this matter but I don’t hold out much hope for corrective measures as this has been an ongoing problem at this facility for years.
