The politics of everyday life: leisure

The politics of everyday life: leisure Work is more intertwined with the rest of our lives than ever. To truly enjoy free time, we must be able to let go of “the realm of necessity”. By Sarah Jaffe When I met Chuckie Denison in 2019, he’d just taken early retirement from General Motors. I was in Ohio to report on the closing of the storied Lordstown factory, where Denison and thousands of others had made cars and which, in the 1960s and 1970s, had a history of rank-and-file rebellion. Denison aimed to keep that spirit alive in his retirement, but he was also thinking about free time more expansively.

The coronavirus pandemic may have pushed us closer to a four-day working week

A 4-day work week might be edging closer here s why CNBC 2/5/2021 © Provided by CNBC With Spain set to test a four-day work week in response to the coronavirus pandemic, experts have said it could signify a more permanent shift in attitudes on our work-life balance.   The Spanish government agreed last week to pilot a 32-hour work week over three years, without cutting workers pay, putting 50 million euros ($60 million) toward the cost of the project for those companies that request to take part.  Inigo Errejon, who leads the small Spanish leftwing party Mas Pais that spearheaded the plan, tweeted at the time that the funding should  serve to reorient the economy towards improving health, caring for the environment and increasing productivity, according to a translation.

A More Boxier Feel : Aspect Ratio, Architecture, and Ecology in A Cure for Wellness (2016)

Figure 5 – Nature in a Box: A Cure for Wellness, and 1.66:1 This brings us back to Bozelli’s comments with which this article began. The digital reconstruction of an aspect ratio that emerged in the 1950s, but has been used sparingly since, demands consideration of its particular qualities and features. In the 1950s, the coming of Cinerama and CinemaScope led Paramount to develop VistaVision and the 1.66:1 ratio, which was initially marketed as a taller and “more comfortable viewing experience.” [21] Supposedly, it allowed filmmakers to compose images with a greater deal of control and resulted in fewer distractions for the audience than did the comparatively extreme width of CinemaScope. Bazin, for instance, although describing the 1.85:1 version of VistaVision, considered it “spectacular enough to satisfy the eye, yet still rational enough to satisfy the mind.”
