Couple to display their vessels for the first time at Southland Boat Show

The Owens are looking forward to displaying their boat that can turn into a maimai by erecting portable framework around the sides and clipping to it canvas and camouflage netting. Andrew, who does most of the work in the Waimatuku business, specialises in designing and building lightweight boats for shallow water, such as estuaries, low land rivers and wetland areas. He thought up the idea to build them after returning from a Canadian holiday three or four years ago when seeing similar types called Jon Boats. He thought they would be ideal for hunting and fishing in New Zealand. “When we got home, he looked to see if you could buy one anywhere [in New Zealand] and there wasn’t, so he decided to make one himself,” Kate said.
