Many cities and counties have chosen to keep their own mask mandates in place at this time despite Gov. Doug Ducey’s lifting of the restrictions relating to COVID-19 in the state of Arizona.
With the executive order being enacted on March 25, several counties and cities like Phoenix are still continuing to keep their mask mandate in city or government buildings affect for the time being.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego stressed in a statement and a following tweet that protecting public health must come first, and that masks are the best and fastest way to fully reopen and recover.

PHOENIX â As Arizona cities and counties debate mask mandates, a leading health expert warned Wednesday, April 7, that wearing masks in public is essential to prevent another wave of COVID-19 cases.
âThere is still a risk of transmission in our community,â said Dr. Joshua LaBaer, the executive director of ASUâs Biodesign Institute. âAnd especially now that we know that this U.K. variant is predominant or becoming predominant in Arizona â so there is without a doubt a benefit to mask-wearing in public for sure.â

Just as one of the major storylines of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was President Donald Trump facing off against Democratic governors like Andrew Cuomo and Gavin Newson, much of the current political wrangling over COVID is being framed as President Biden urging caution versus GOP governors, like Florida s Ron DeSantis and Texas s Greg Abbott, throwing their states open without masks.
But below the surface, there s been a possibly more consequential fight over COVID that has not received nearly as much attention. It s not between the president and the states, but between red state governors and their blue cities, which almost universally promoted mask mandates and other mitigation measures â and by all evidence were the key element staunching the spread of the virus in those states.
