On a normal morning, Maine-Endwell High School history and government teacher Rachel Murat gets to school early, settling into her classroom at the end of one of the school’s long hallways around 4 a.m.
On Thursday, she spent a few extra minutes at home, scrolling through Twitter on her cell phone, reading news articles and watching live coverage of the U.S. electoral vote certification, preparing herself to answer as many of her students’ questions about the previous day s events as she could.

There’s no rest for the weary when it comes to New York weather: Just as the Southern Tier digs out from last week’s record-breaking snow, a Christmas Eve forecast of rain followed by freezing temperatures has raised concerns about potential flooding, stressed rooftops and hazardous roadways.
“There’s multiple hazards that we’re keeping an eye on,” said meteorologist Bryan Greenblatt of the National Weather Service Binghamton.
When will it start to rain in the Southern Tier?
While the week began with mild, calm conditions, a low-pressure system will bring widespread rain across New York and Pennsylvania on Thursday. The rain is expected to increase in intensity from midday through the evening and could be moderate to locally heavy at times.
