CHENNAI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said DMK has indulged in false propaganda on the Katchatheevu issue for the last 50 year.
Chennai, Apr 2 (PTI) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday accused the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu of spreading a false campaign on the Katchatheevu islet, ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974, and for making irresponsible statements on the issue.
The island has no source of drinking water and the only structure on it is a church which holds an annual three-day festival that draws devotees from both India and Sri Lanka.
In the recent political landscape of Tamil Nadu, ties with the BJP have become a contentious issue among Dravidian parties. Accusations of secret deals and alliances have surfaced, with the BJP using the Katchatheevu island controversy to gain leverage ahead of the general elections. BJP s strategy in Tamil Nadu, led by promising leader Annamalai, aims to break new ground in a historically challenging political terrain.
