Hundreds of people from Calcutta and neighbouring districts joined a rally in the heart of the city to condemn the lives lost in the CISF firing in Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar on Saturday.
The “attempt to legitimise the killings” by BJP leaders was as heinous as the killings, said participants in the rally that started at College Street and culminated at Shyambazar.
“This (Sitalkuchi) is a trailer of the
asol paribartan (real change) that the BJP wants to herald in Bengal. As if the killings were not enough, now there is an attempt to justify the firing by using words like ‘polarisation’ and ‘self-defence’,” Malay Tewari, one of the organisers, said at the start of the rally.

Two separate civil society initiatives calling for voting against the BJP is gaining momentum as the state Assembly elections inch forth. One of the organisations, “Bengal against Fascist BJP-RSS”, is holding a public rally in Kolkata where supporters and organisers of this programme in different districts have also joined.
A clutch of social organisations that had protested against the new citizenship matrix and supported the poor when a sudden lockdown was forced on them has launched a campaign called No Vote to BJP.
The campaign has reached various districts, organising meetings, performing skits, distributing pamphlets and putting up posters with one clarion call “vote any party you want but the BJP”.
On Saturday, the people behind the campaign released a 103-second Bengali video that shows people of various ages, from varied backgrounds and in diverse clothes dancing to a peppy track that explains the “perils” of voting the BJP.

The campaign is named âNo Vote To BJPâ.
A group of people connected to various social and mass movements came together back in November 2020, which led to the formation of a forum called âBengal against Fascist RSS-BJPâ.
